Colossians 1:26

August 6th, 2010

the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints.

Understanding and revelation is not determined by man’s pursuit, no matter how vigorous, although this is necessary. It is determined by God’s purpose and timing. When you get a revelation from God’s word, and insight and understanding into the things of God, it has happened because God allowed you to see it. What was a mystery to you, has now been disclosed. Understanding this will keep you protected from the pride of knowing :-)

Colossians 1:25

August 5th, 2010

I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—

You do not become a teacher in the church because you go to bible college. Two things are revealed here by Paul. 1. A servant heart. 2. A commission and calling that comes from God. It is also the responsibility of teachers to present the word of God in it’s fullness, so the hearers are well rounded and balanced in their diet. If you listen to teaching podcasts, make sure you listen to a variety of teachers, from differing backgrounds. Make sure they are doctrinally sound first. Will help develop your understanding of the Word.

Colossians 1:24

August 4th, 2010

Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.

When you are persecuted, insulted, rejected, ridiculed or anything else because of the gospel, they are not really attacking you, but Christ, who is in you. So the affliction we endure are really Christ’s affliction. The apostles and early disciples considered it a privilege when persecution came because of Jesus. It says in Acts 5:41-42 They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.

One day William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army was marching down the street, a young man came up and spat in his face and said, that is what I think of your Jesus. One of Booths friends went to wipe it off with his handkerchief and Booth said, It’s OK, leave it there, I consider it a medal.

Whatever you’re having to endure because of Jesus in your life, remember those who have gone before you, consider it an honour born for Christ, and endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. God is watching and is pleased with you :-)

What is Fellowship?

August 3rd, 2010

Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to fellowship….
Fellowship is a poor English translation of the rich Greek word koinonia.
It infuses many different elements and concepts that the word fellowship fails to communicate.

What did God see, when he envisioned the church as his vehicle of redemption in the world?  His vehicle of restoration?
He pictured a body. An interconnection of indispensable parts all working together for one purpose. The church that is in the mind and heart of God is not a bunch of people who gather together on a Sunday and then go there own way. Individual units working an operating independently and in isolation.

Words translated from koinonia
1. Communion

Paul says in 1 Cor 10:16-17 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.

The word communion is koinonia. It means more than just hanging out together. Or a gathering.
Being a disciple involves opening up your life to others and doing life with them in the context of common union, or communion or community.
The basis of our common union or communion, or community,  is Jesus. He is the reason that we are here. But a NT disciple does not just have vertical connections, but horizontal. The same bonds that link us to Jesus also link him or her with the church. It is not either/ or. The New Testament letters describe those bonds as so vital and genuine that a deep level of intimacy can be experienced among the members of a local church.

  • It means sharing one another’s joys, and being there in their pain and disappointments.
  • Sharing the highs and the lows. The ups and downs
  • At the promotions and the redundency. The wins and the losses. The births and the deaths
  • Doing life together

2. Contribution
Koinonia speaks of not just being together, but also doing together. Participation. koinonia is never passive in its meaning, it is always linked to action. Our communion is discovered from our commitment to Jesus and to his purpose.

Sometimes people will move or leave the church- relationship faded, weren’t real friends. Don’t understand the nature of the relationship. Amos 3:3 Can 2 walk together unless they are agreed. With fellowship comes a close and intimate relationship, but also vision, purpose, and action. We are here on purpose. We are here to impact and influence the spiritual and social landscape of this area for the glory of God and the benefit of people.
In fellowship, a mutual bond is formed which supersedes the self interest of the individual.

We protect ourselves with individualism, But what we yearn for is fraternity, belonging, and companionship. Not a dissolving of the individual into the whole, but a true interdependence. Christianity not just about believing but about belonging. Belonging and inclusion are a fundamental and essential part of living life well.

Colossians 1:23

July 29th, 2010

if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

The true benefits and fruit of following Christ are discovered over the long haul. If you’re looking for immediate return, every time, you are going to be disappointed. The real value is found as you continue in your faith. When you face a challenge, and despite your constant fears and nagging doubts, stand firm and not moved from the hope found in the scriptures, sometimes over a long period of time, you discover things about God’s faithfulness, love and goodness, that you would never have understood, that words cant express, without that time of testing.

As in the words of the old negro spiritual, I’ve decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back…..

Colossians 1:22

July 28th, 2010

But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—

Jesus death on the cross has not only brought us back into relationship with God, from whom we had been estranged and seperated, but made us new in every way. We come into God’s presence holy. The greek word in hagios and means a saint. Did you know you are a saint? Not because of anything you did, but because of what Jesus did. As far as God is concerned, in Christ, you are perfect in every way. When was the last time your boss told you that?  :-)

Col 1:21

July 27th, 2010

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behaviour.

When I hear Christians complaining about their life or circumstances, and that they were better off before they were saved, I think of this scripture. It’s like the Israelites complaining about their new life out of Egypt . They said Numbers 11:5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. Sure, but what about the beatings, the suffering, the endless work for little reward, the sense of hopelessness and meaninglessness to life.

It is important we remember the whole picture of what it was like before we met Christ and not employ selective amnesia. We were alienated from God, living as his enemies, and yet he reached out into our world and reconciled us to himself. Sounds like a God of love to me. Let’s give his way a go :-)

Journey Of A dream

July 25th, 2010

Genesis 37:5 Joseph had a dream…..

Every great achievement and every great business begins as a dream.
Those wonderful feelings as the dream begins to germinate in your heart. Just like the blossoming of love. It’s arousing, it’s exciting, it’s intoxicating, you think about it for hours and wonder where the time has gone.

But as we will see through the life of Joseph, every dream moving from conception to completion will be a journey of highs and lows. Up’s and downs. twists and turns.
If you knew what was involved in seeing the dream realised, you may never have begun the journey.

1. Sometimes those that should be for you, can turn on you
Gen 37:18-20 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”
Most people expect competitors to try to close you down, put you out of business. To take you customers or clients. But the hardest hits can come from the direction you are not expecting.
A partner who robs you. An employee who betrays you. A family member who takes advantage of you. You go into an investment with someone you trust and they rip you off.
They see you coming but you don’t see it coming.

  • You can feel angry, humiliated, foolish, revengeful, defeated and deflated. How could they do that to me.
  • When people see favour on your life they want it. Want a piece of it. They think the favour is tied up with the business, or that big client or account you got, but you know that the favour comes from the father. When you know that, then you’re in business.

Gen 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than the others and he made a richly ornamented robe for him
2. Just because circumstances take a bad turn does not necessarily mean you are not in God’s will.
What we learn from Josephs story is that through it all, God works for the good for those who love him. That there is purpose to it all.
What was devastating at the time, Joseph many years later could say Gen 45: 6-8 For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will not be plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. “So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.

Proverbs 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.
Doesn’t say Lord determines his pleasant steps.

3. You have to determine to prosper where you’re planted
Gen 39:1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt.
Not where he wanted to be. Not where he pictured himself. Not a part of his 5 year plan. Egypt means bondage, means confinement, place of limitation. Right now, you may not be where you want to be. You may not understand how where you are now and what your doing now, fits with the dream that you have been given.

But Gen 39:2 The LORD was with Joseph….
Even in the place of limitation, the place of confinement, the Lord is with you.

…and he prospered, Why?
….and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
He prospered because he chose to live in the now and not in the past or the future. If only (past)- or I wish (future). He chose to give 100% even though it was not where he wanted to be.

God is more interested in your character than you charisma. This is what releases God’s anointing upon your life. It’s through pressure the oil is released from the olive. It’s through testing that God’s anointing comes upon you. Luke 4:18 The spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me. Had just some out of time of testing, trials and temptation.
Maybe your being tempted to give up and let go

4. People may let you down, but God never will.
Joseph ends up in prison, interprets 2 dreams, But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison.

Gen 40:23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.
People will let you down. Will take the credit for your work. Your ideas. Your plan. If your trust is only in people you will be let down time and time again and it will make you bitter.
If you trust first in God, disappointment can make you bigger. Proverbs 3: 5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

5. Through the journey you are changed to become a vehicle for God and not just yourself
At the beginning the dream was all about Joseph Gen 37:6 “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”

By the end he could see
Gen 45:9-11 God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don’t delay. You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me—you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have. I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come.

The dream was never meant to be just about you :-)

Colossians 1:20

July 23rd, 2010

and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

The blood of Jesus contains the power of reconciliation. The word means to return to its former state of harmony. When things go wrong, break down, fall apart in life, we can get things back on track by:

1. Reconciling with Jesus. Discovering and admitting the part we played in the dilemma and asking for forgiveness through his blood shed on the cross.
2. Asking for his plan of reconciliation in the business, marriage, relationship, situation, job etc. Proverbs 3:5-6 says

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;  in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

This process may be short and easy or it may be long and arduous. It doesn’t say how long to trust, it just says trust……..

Colossians 1:19

July 22nd, 2010

For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him…

When we look at Jesus in the Bible, we get a clear picture of what God is like, because he is God. The compassion Jesus shows toward the poor, the suffering, the downtrodden, the broken, the alienated, the hurting, the seeking, the lonley, is a full and complete picture of how he feels toward you. Our response is to allow Christ to dwell fully is us. That is the calling of the Christian.
